CBU TALKS: ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE
We sit down with James Gerrie, Professor of Philosophy and Religious Studies at Cape Breton University, to explore artificial intelligence through a philosophical lens. Drawing on decades of experience teaching Philosophy of Mind, Minds Natural and Artificial, and Technology and Society, Professor Gerrie discusses how AI challenges our assumptions about intelligence, learning, and human uniqueness.
In this episode of CBU Talks, Todd Graham sits down with Maya Giorbelidze from the Shannon School of Business at Cape Breton University to discuss the rapid rise of artificial intelligence in academia and beyond. Drawing on her experiences as an early adopter, Maya reflects on her first encounters with generative AI in early 2023 and how quickly it became part of everyday academic life for both faculty and students.
We talk with Francis Sims, CBU alumnus, educator and frequent CBC guest commentator, for an in-depth discussion on artificial intelligence in higher education. Francis shares his journey from studying engineering at CBU to working internationally in technology roles at companies such as IBM, BlackBerry and Rogers. Francis is now serving as Associate Dean at Humber Polytechnic, he oversees programs in AI, and computer science, bringing a rare blend of industry and academic insight.
With 76% of students already using ChatGPT, the question isn’t whether to allow AI in education, but how to prepare students with the ethical frameworks and critical thinking skills they’ll need. Our discussion with Gurmit Kaur offers practical strategies and actionable approaches for educators navigating one of education’s most significant disruptions.
Professor Beriensteil offers a grounded perspective on what today’s “AI” really is, arguing that many systems are better understood as advanced algorithms rather than true intelligence. Our conversation tackles some of the biggest questions facing students and educators today: How should AI be used in learning? Does it enhance creativity or risk replacing critical thinking? What does academic integrity look like in an age of generative tools?
We speak with Harsimran Kaur, Student Union President at Cape Breton University, about the rapid emergence of AI in academic settings from the student perspective. Harsimran shares her journey from AI skeptic to advocate, beginning in late 2022 when ChatGPT exploded among students. With most students using AI regardless of policies, Simei advocates for comprehensive AI education rather than prohibition.
